Acres Hockey Program Co-ordinator, Henry Acres, accepts full-time position with Swedish Club.

Asplöven HC and Kalix UHC have agreed on a partnership to offer complete training steps from U16 level to Allsvenskan. Cooperation between clubs will be at the U16, J18, J20 and Sr teams levels starting in 2013-14 season.

- We are doing this to boost up our youth, and to support our A-team with elite players in the future. A joint venture to develop hockey in Eastern Norrbotten says Asplövens sports director Per Kenttä.

- We see this cooperation with Asplöven gives players in Eastern Norrbotten a unique opportunity to stay in a safe home environment to develop as players and people. We can also provide extra training during the school year (for grades 7-9), led by Petter Christoffersson. Thanks to this cooperation, we will strengthen youth activities and support our A team with players from the local area says Kalix sporting director Anders Karlsson.

In connection with this, Asplöven HC have chosen to employ Henry Acres who will serve as youth co-ordinator for the club and also responsible for the club's investment in a high school hockey development program in Haparanda.

- It's very good that we found this solution with Henry, he has a big heart for Asplöven and a wealth of expertise that we will benefit from now and into the future, says Kenttä.

Asplöven HC is planning to offer a high-caliber training program to develop our Jr. aged player’s, this will happen in co-operation with Tornedalsskolan, together we can offer the possibility of combining secondary school education in any program with outstanding hockey training starting during school term 2013-14.

If you are currently an active hockey player and aspire to develop as a professional sportsman we welcome you to register your interest below.

We are searching for highly motivated, goal-driven young men with a burning desire to “Get Better Every Day.” Asplöven HC in collaboration with Tornedalsskolan offer an arrangement where you are given the opportunities and conditions needed to manage both school and hockey. It is important for us that after your high school years you are well prepared for the future, in sport as well as educationally.

Upper secondary education
The High school program that you are looking into is run in partnership with Tornedalsskolan. Besides the hockey training session during school hours each week led by experienced coaches from Asplöven HC this program offers a lot of flexibility in terms of your studies, you select your study conditions and subjects, and choose which program to apply for outside of hockey. Remember to turn to Tornedalsskolan regarding choice of school programs.

Participating in the Hockey Gymnasium means that you get optional subjects in sport and in this case, hockey, more about high school programs, etc. available through Tornedalsskolan in Haparanda. Applications are made directly to Tornedalsskolan, Haparanda, according to their rules and the notification is to Asplöven HC in terms of training in ice hockey.

Hockey Training
The training conducted during the hockey school is based on individual skills development. The training is carried out in the mornings at least 2 times/week, and additional theory and team trainings to this program will be every afternoon/evening under Asplövens J20Elit/J18 Jr. team’s.

Responsible for the operations is Henry Acres, a retired professional hockey player and this autumn will be an elite licensed coach.

To be considered for admission to the high school program and Asplövens hockey operations, you should:
* Be responsible for your secondary education.
* Today be an active hockey player and also at a considerable high-level of hockey ability in the base skills (skating, shooting, passing, stickhandling), understanding of the game and at a similarly high level in regards to mental strength and desire to improve/compete
* Be able to take a large ownership of your development, both in hockey and in school studies.

Housing is arranged on your own. Hockey Gymnasium has the ambition to both mediate contacts to landlords and through partners contribute to provision of accommodation.

Acres Hockey 2013 Announcement

Haparanda, Sweden

Acres Hockey Training is announcing after 9 consecutive years they will not be operating any training programs in Canada during the summer of 2013. “After much careful consideration and discussion with various groups I have decided that I am unable to give the programs the full attention they must have in order to provide our clients with the high-level programs they and I expect from Acres Hockey” says Program Director, Henry Acres. “With ever-growing work and family commitments in Europe I am unavailable to come to Canada and run the program the right way.”

Acres, a retired professional player is presently working for Asplöven Hockey Club in his wife, Christina’s hometown of Haparanda in Sweden. “I am coaching with a professional team that competes in the 2nd highest league in Sweden, Hockey Allsvenskan, (locked-out NHL stars, Anze Kopitar, Gabriel Landeskog and Canuck, Mason Raymond kept their skills sharp in the league this season), the Head Coach of the U20 team along with recently accepting the position to organize the clubs Inaugural Hockey Gymnasium program (high-school credit hockey program), Summer Hockey School and oversee the Jr. development programs at the U18 and U16 levels. In January 2013 I also began as a part-time Middle School PE teacher. There are only so many hrs. in each day and my days are full. Twins, William and Emma are approaching 4 years old and they are only young once. The strain, on the family, of a full-time hockey season is enough; I am very comfortable this decision is the right one for this year.”

Is this the end of Acres Hockey Training in Oceanside? “At this time there will be no programs in 2013, I will re-evaluate as we get into next fall and what opportunities are available as we move into 2014” added Acres. “I am so very grateful to the Oceanside community for all the support and having the opportunity to pass on some of my hockey knowledge to the next generation. It is a full year’s work to put together the programs and to have created this from nothing to having over 100 players train each summer with us has been an amazing process. The 2012 edition of the schools shines brightest as with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Parksville, we created the Michal Vincent Acres Memorial Bursary and provided the opportunity to 10 kids to attend our program that otherwise would not have been able to participate.”

Over the years Acres Hockey offered skill development and conditioning programs including Defensemen specialty clinics for players from the age of 5 right up to professional players. In 2010, Acres Hockey partnered with Nanaimo-based Brain Navigator’s- Colleen Butler to offer the world’s 1st Concussion-Prevention Hockey School program. “Colleen and I worked extremely hard to create a well-rounded program that provided players with the tools to be aware and protect themselves on the ice along with the classroom session knowledge that you only get one brain in life and concussions are serious business, not to be dealt with foolhardily.”

Acres Hockey has played a part in developing many of Oceanside and Nanaimo’s top talents over the last decade. Notable Acres Hockey Alumni include: Qualicum’s Kyle Kramer, Nanaimo Clippers, BCHL (Brown University, NCAA 2013-14), and Evan Tironese, Alberni Valley Bulldogs, BCHL (R.P.I., NCAA 2013-14), Nanaimo’s, Chase Lang, Calgary Hitmen, WHL and current Oceanside Generals: Taylor Grey, James Snedden, Matt Biagioni, Travis Flug, and Chandler Bruyckere.

RESPECT-The Name of the Game!!!

Respect:The puck was shot into the corner in the Leafs’ zone. Bower moved toward the puck uncertainly, leaving himself exposed from behind. Howe bore down toward the puck. Howe, the toughest guy around, could’ve plastered Bower’s head against the glass, perhaps deciding the Cup.

Instead, he yelled: “Look out, John, I’m behind you.”

Raffi Torres Suspended 25 Games!

Frankly, after six suspensions for hits to the head dating back to 2007, Torres' suspension is not outrageous. If the NHL is serious about cleaning up its game and removing plays and players like this, then 25 games for a now-six-time repeat offender is an honest step in that direction.

Concussion Awareness

“Children and teens don't have to become unconscious to have a serious concussion,” Concussion is a brain injury which can happen in just about any sport when collision happens. “It doesn't even have to be a direct blow to the head. Even a ding, getting ‘your bell rung' or what seems like a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.”

Concussion Awareness

The answer is to respect concussions, not fear them. It is to make sure that concussed players do not return to the lineup, either within the same game, where there’s a suspicion of concussion, or in subsequent games, until they are healed.

Definition of Canadian Hockey

"Fight" is not "fighting." Fight is never giving up. Gretzky, Orr, Richard, Lemieux, Lafleur — they were great fighters. They fought with their head, hands, legs, will, and need to be special, and rarely with their fists. The toughest players aren't those who hit but those who are willing to be hit, to fight their way into open ice, to fight their way to the net, to fight expectation and disappointment to score the game-changing goal. "Fight" is fighting spirit. It's Canadian hockey at its best.
